A city by the illustrious past, capital town of Robert Guiscard's duchy and seat
of the famous School of Medicine, Salerno overlooks
the homonymous gulf, clinging to the sides of the steep mountains and towards the
sea. Recently relaunched from an urban perspective, it jealously preserves its historical
center, consisting of the medieval quarter and its main street, Via dei Mercanti,
overlooked by old beautiful buildings.
Dominated by the Arechi Castle, Salerno is a jewel box of architectural
treasures which reflect both the economic wealth and the intellectual and cultural
fervor that characterized the city during the past centuries. Due to its position,
Salerno is an ideal starting point for excursions to the most famous locations of
the Amalfi coast and the Cilento coast, to the
archaeological site of Paestum and to the islands of the Gulf
of Naples.
